talkJDM.com Feature of Summer 2010
Z3RO'S 1999 Honda Civic EX EJ8
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
Well, there isnt much to tell in my opinion haha. I graduated, spent a few years goofing off then joined the Air Force where I spent the next 6 years goofing off more and getting paid for it until last April when I left cause I couldnt lose weight. so now I'm in the process of getting my new car up to daily status so I can start studying psychology.
When, why and how did you pick up this car?
August 26, 2002 is the official day my Ex was considered mine. The story of this car revolves around my late grandma and a busted 1986 Mercury Grand Marquis. Some how we got $400 more then what I paid for the Merc even though it was starved of oil. I made it a mission to get a car with a sun roof and manual and this car was the only one within my price range at the local Nissan used car dealer. Never considered a Honda before I saw this car either. In fact the lines it possessed reminded me of a BMW and I thought that was pretty sharp looking when I first looked it over. Bought the car as the second owner with it only having 38K miles on the odometer. I still laugh to this day that I was paid $400 to run my Merc into the ground during my High School days.
Your original plans for the car, what were they and have they changed since?
Plans? I didnt have any plans for this car originally. I wanted it to have a little more pep but nothing huge when it came to power. When it came to looks I wasnt after much. I just wanted it to be clean and simple. After my trip to Japan though things started to change and that's when I started getting some stuff you see on the car now. Keeping it clean is top priority and being true to my vision of how my car should be hasnt changed.
What was your motivation, inspiration or what influenced you the most during this build?
I want this car to be featured within a car magazine at least once so I can give a shout out to my deceased Grandma who without I wouldnt have this car. Ive never had a person's car influence my build. I have had a community influence me though. Living in Japan and seeing the stuff I did most definitely influenced me and I'm glad to say Spoon was one of those companies that helped me realize how I wanted to build this car.
What was the hardest part and/or decision in making this build? The easiest?
Hardest part, wasnt one. I never had a decision that was hard to make as it was all what I wanted to do. If anything the Hardest thing was just getting the money for the parts i wanted haha.
Easiest, since nothing was hard it was all really easy. Most of the time parts I was looking for found me when I needed them. I just kept my eyes open looking for the best deals.
What is your favorite feature on the car? Your least favorite?
Motor hands down is my favorite part of the car. Having a B16B is a dream come true as its the only motor that was unique to the Civic chassis and wasnt offered in any other trim or body type when it was in production. revving to 9k is SOOO sexy when the car sounds great.
I dont have a least favorite really. If there was something I didnt like I wouldnt have it on the car or I would have replaced it with something better.
Looking back at your build is there anything you would have done differently?
There is one thing I would have done differently. I would have saved a little more cash and gotten something better then Tein Basics. They arent dampening adjustable which is something that I would have loved to have. Either way I love them just wished I wouldnt have rushed that purchase. Call it Hind Sight.
Do you have any future plans for the car? Is it complete or is there still work that needs to be done?
As things sit now I want to make it more track oriented. Getting a splitter for the Walker bumper, rear diffuser, rear wing, and a better suspension are things I am interested in aquireing. Also need to get a Header and some engine tuning done. At this point the Exterior is done just needs a new paint job for it to be perfect.
Any advice for people starting out in the scene?
Take your time building your car. Look for good deals but dont just jump into one just cause your impatient. Sometimes holding off you can find something better. Dont be a douche and listen to those who have been doing this longer. Take their advice even if you dont use it and do what you think you need to do. Dont let others opinions change yours. Make a plan and stick with it and you will feel that much better about it when your done.
Any additional comments you would like to make?
Thanks to Danny and talkJDM.com for this chance to shine. talkJDM.com has one of the coolest communities I've seen and I hope she thrives for as long as she remains.
